Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and diced
- 3 large apples, peeled and chopped (Granny Smith or Fuji recommended)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- Optional: caramel sauce for drizzling
- Optional: chopped nuts for topping
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Combine flour and powdered sugar in a bowl. Add cold, diced butter and mix until coarse crumbs form. Press evenly into a greased baking pan and bake for 20 minutes until lightly golden.
- While the crust bakes, toss chopped apples with granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Set aside to meld flavors.
- Spread the apple mixture over the baked crust. Sprinkle with additional crumble topping or nuts if desired. Bake for another 30-35 minutes until bubbly and golden.
- Let the bars cool completely before slicing. Drizzle with caramel sauce or serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for extra indulgence.
Notes
- Use ripe, firm apples for the best flavor and texture.
- Chill the dough before baking for a firmer crust if desired.
- Storing in an airtight container keeps the bars fresh for up to 2 days at room temperature or a week in the fridge.
- Freezing the bars preserves them for up to 3 months; reheat before serving for optimal texture.
