Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3 cups peeled, sliced tart apples (such as Granny Smith)
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Beat softened butter and granulated sugar until creamy. Mix in vanilla extract.
- Gradually add flour and salt, mixing until dough forms. Press evenly into the prepared baking dish and bake for 15 minutes or until lightly golden.
- Combine peeled, sliced tart apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla in a bowl. Toss to coat.
- Spread the apple mixture over the pre-baked crust.
- In a separate bowl, mix oats, chopped nuts (if using), brown sugar, and cinnamon. Sprinkle evenly over the apples.
- Return to the oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and apples are bubbly.
- Allow to cool for at least 20 minutes before cutting into squares. Serve warm or at room temperature, optionally with ice cream or caramel sauce.
Notes
- Use tart apples like Granny Smith for optimal flavor balance.
- Add extra oats or nuts for a chewier streusel.
- Ensure butter is softened for easier mixing and a tender crust.
- For a boozy twist, add a splash of bourbon or apple brandy to the apple filling.
