Ingredients
Scale
- 1 ½ pounds ground beef or a mix of beef and pork (see more beef recipes)
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- ½ cup ketchup
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 cups shredded cheese (varieties like cheddar or mozzarella)
- 3 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
- ¼ cup milk
- 2 tablespoons butter
- Optional herbs: thyme, parsley for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large bowl, mix ground meat, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, garlic, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper until well combined. Shape into a loaf and place in a baking dish.
- Bake for about 45 minutes, or until internal temperature reaches 160°F (70°C).
- Meanwhile, boil potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain and return to pot.
- Add butter and milk to potatoes; mash until smooth. Season with salt and pepper.
- Spread mashed potatoes over the cooked meatloaf, then sprinkle with shredded cheese.
- Bake for an additional 15 minutes until cheese melts and bubbles. For a crisp top, broil for 2-3 minutes.
Notes
- You can substitute ground turkey for a leaner option.
- Use your favorite cheese varieties for topping, like cheddar or mozzarella.
- Add chopped herbs into the meat mixture for extra flavor.
- Ensure the meatloaf reaches an internal temperature of 160°F for safety.
