Classic German Frikadellen are juicy, flavorful meat patties that are a staple in German cuisine. Perfect for lunch, dinner, or as a hearty snack, these pan-fried delights are made with ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork), onions, breadcrumbs, and aromatic spices. Serve them with mustard, potatoes, or in a sandwich for an authentic German meal!

  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 6 Frikadellen

Ingredients

Scale
  • 500g ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork)
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 1 egg
  • 50g breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbsp mustard
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • 2 tbsp butter or oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, diced onion, egg, breadcrumbs, mustard, salt, pepper, paprika, and parsley. Mix well.
  2. Knead the mixture with your hands for a few minutes to ensure it binds well.
  3. Divide into equal portions and shape into oval or round patties, about 2 cm thick.
  4. Heat butter or oil in a pan over medium heat. Fry patties for 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through.
  5. Serve hot with mustard, potatoes, or in a bun.

Notes

  • Use a mix of beef and pork for extra juiciness.
  • Let the mixture rest for 10 minutes before shaping for better binding.
  • Don’t overcrowd the pan while frying.
  • For a lighter version, bake at 180°C for 20 minutes.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
