Ingredients
Scale
- 1.5 lbs of steak (such as round steak, sirloin, or flank steak), cut into ½-inch thick slices
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
- 28 oz crushed tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- Fresh basil leaves, for garnish
- Optional: capers, olives
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until softened and translucent, about 5-7 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
- Season the steak slices generously with salt and black pepper, adding red pepper flakes for extra heat if desired.
- Increase the heat to medium-high and add the seasoned steak slices to the skillet. Sear them for about 2-3 minutes per side until browned and remove from skillet.
- Pour crushed tomatoes into the skillet, stirring in oregano, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer, return seared steak, cover, and simmer for 30-40 minutes until tender.
Notes
- Choose the Right Cut: Opt for tender cuts like sirloin or round steak.
- Don’t Overcook: Simmering too long can make the steak tough; check for tenderness periodically.
- Use Fresh Herbs: Fresh oregano and basil enhance flavor.
- Serve Immediately: Best served hot right after cooking.
