- 1 cup boiling water
For the chocolate frosting:
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3½ cups powdered sugar
- ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ cup milk (or more if needed)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- Sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.
- In a separate bowl, whisk eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry mixture gradually, mixing well. Carefully stir in the boiling water to make the batter smooth and liquid.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow cakes to cool for 10 minutes in the pans, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- For the frosting, beat softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing well. Add vanilla and milk, beating until fluffy.
- Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a generous amount of frosting on top. Place the second layer and frost the top and sides of the cake evenly. Decorate as desired!

- You can add chocolate shavings or sprinkles as decoration for an extra touch.
- If the frosting is too thick, add a little more milk; if too thin, add more powdered sugar.
