Ingredients
Scale
- 1 loaf of challah or brioche bread, cubed
- 1 pound of bacon, cooked and crumbled
- 2 cups of shredded Gruyère cheese
- 8 large eggs
- 2 cups of milk
- 1 cup of heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
- Optional: chopped fresh chives or parsley for garnish
Instructions
- Prepare the bread, bacon, and cheese by cubing the bread and mixing it with crumbled bacon and Gruyère cheese in a large bowl.
- Create the custard mixture by whisking together eggs, milk, heavy cream, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper in a separate bowl.
- Combine the custard mixture with the bread mixture, ensuring everything is evenly coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer the mixture to a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, cover with foil, and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until golden brown. Serve warm.
Notes
- For a vegetarian option, omit the bacon and use sautéed mushrooms or spinach instead.
- Experiment with different cheese varieties like cheddar or Swiss for unique flavors.
- To enhance flavors, consider adding spices like nutmeg or cinnamon.
- For a sweeter twist, drizzle maple syrup over the casserole before serving.
- Using high-quality Gruyère cheese will significantly improve the dish’s flavor.
