Ingredients
Scale
- 4 large Granny Smith or Fuji apples
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup light corn syrup
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 teaspoon red food coloring (optional for a spooky effect)
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar (for glossy coating)
- Wooden sticks or popcorn sticks
- Sprinkles, edible glitter, or spooky candies for decoration (optional)
Instructions
- Wash and dry the apples thoroughly. Remove stems and insert a wooden stick into each apple’s core to create handles.
- In a heavy-duty saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, water, and vinegar. Cook over medium heat, stirring gently until sugar dissolves. Attach a candy thermometer and bring to a boil. Continue until it reaches 300°F (hard crack stage).
- Remove from heat and stir in red food coloring if desired.
- Quickly dip each apple into the hot syrup, tilting the pan to coat evenly. Use a spoon for better coverage, then let excess drip off and place on parchment paper.
- Add decorations like sprinkles or edible glitter while the coating is still warm. Let set for 15-20 minutes until the candy hardens.
Notes
- Ensure apples are dry before dipping to help the coating adhere better.
- Work swiftly once the syrup reaches 300°F to prevent premature hardening.
- If the candy crystallizes or thickens, reheat gently to restore glossiness.
