- 5 lbs of apples (about 10 medium apples), peeled, cored, and sliced
- 2 cups of sugar (adjust to taste)
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon allspice (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the apples by peeling, coring, and slicing them.
- Cook the apples in a large pot with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and salt for about 10 minutes.
- Blend the softened apples until smooth and continue cooking on low until thickened, about 1 to 2 hours.
- Transfer the apple butter to sterilized jars and seal tightly to store.
Notes
- Store in a cool, dark place if unopened; refrigerate after opening.
- Homemade apple butter can be kept fresh for up to a year if canned properly.
- Best served on toast, in oatmeal, or with savory dishes.
