Ingredients
Scale
- 1.5 lbs steak (such as sirloin or ribeye), cut into 1-inch thick slices
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 2 bell peppers (any color), sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh basil leaves, for garnish
- Grated Parmesan cheese, for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Season the steak slices with salt and pepper. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the steak for 2-3 minutes per side, until browned. Remove the steak from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and bell peppers. SautΓ© for 5-7 minutes, until softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute, until fragrant.
- Pour in the crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, and red pepper flakes (if using). Season with salt and pepper to taste. Bring the sauce to a simmer.
- Return the seared steak to the skillet, nestling the slices into the tomato sauce. Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the steak is cooked to your desired doneness and the sauce has thickened slightly.
Notes
- Choose tender cuts like sirloin or ribeye for the best results.
- Donβt overcook the steak; sear quickly and simmer until just done.
- Adjust seasoning in the sauce as needed; a pinch of sugar can reduce acidity.
- Add other veggies, such as mushrooms or zucchini, for extra flavor.
- Increase red pepper flakes for added spice.
