Ingredients
Scale
- 1 large red onion, thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup white vinegar or apple cider vinegar
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- Optional: peppercorns, garlic cloves, bay leaf, chili flakes
Instructions
- Peel and thinly slice the red onion into rings or half-moons.
- In a small saucepan, combine vinegar, water, sugar, and salt. Bring to a gentle simmer, stirring until sugar and salt dissolve. Add optional flavorings if desired.
- Place sliced onions in a clean jar or container. Pour hot brine over onions, ensuring they are fully submerged.
- Seal the jar and let sit at room temperature for 30 minutes. For stronger flavor, refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.
Notes
- Use a clean utensil each time you retrieve onions to prevent contamination.
- For a more intense flavor, refrigerate longer.
- You can customize with different vinegars or add herbs and spices.
