  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound mixed seafood (shrimp, mussels, clams, calamari, fish fillets)
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 cup fish broth (or vegetable broth)
  • 1/2 cup dry white wine
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Crusty bread, for serving

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and red bell pepper, and cook for another 3 minutes until fragrant.
  2. Pour in the crushed tomatoes, fish broth, and white wine. Stir in the dried oregano and red pepper flakes (if using). Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
  3. Add the seafood to the pot, starting with the ones that take longer to cook first (such as calamari and fish fillets). Gently stir to ensure the seafood is submerged in the liquid. Cover the pot and let it simmer for about 5-7 minutes, or until the seafood is cooked through and the mussels and clams have opened. Discard any mussels or clams that do not open.
  4. Stir in the fresh parsley. Ladle the hearty seafood stew into bowls and serve hot with crusty bread for dipping.

Notes

  • Use Fresh Seafood: The fresher the seafood, the better the flavor of your Italian seafood stew.
  • Don’t Overcook the Seafood: Overcooked seafood can become rubbery. Cook it just until it’s opaque and cooked through.
  • Adjust the Seasoning: Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed. A squeeze of lemon juice can brighten the flavors.
  • Add a Touch of Heat: Red pepper flakes add a pleasant kick, enhancing the overall taste of the Mediterranean seafood recipe.
  • Serve with Crusty Bread: The bread is perfect for soaking up the flavorful broth of this Italian fish stew.
